Internet dating has been with us for some years now, though is still looked on as being somewhat “down market”. I find this attitude very strange, particularly from those who are over a certain age. I’m not meaning to be being discriminatory. I was 46 when I got divorced.

The fact is, for many people, reaching forty years of age or thereabouts can be a time of drastic change – we are often vastly different people in terms of ideas, (and yes, often in physique as well!). A lot of relationship breakups occur around this time, and suddenly one is thrust back into the dating arena, possibly having been out of it for 20 or so years. As Tom Hank’s character in the film Sleepless in Seattle is told when he is thinking of dating again after getting over the death of his wife, “a lot’s changed since then”.

So what do you do when you find yourself “back in the saddle” after a long relationship is over. The fact is, there are not that many places open to you – clubbing is probably left to the younger ones who consider anyone over 30 to be “old”. The pressure of work is such that you probably don’t have a lot of time anyway.

That’s where internet dating comes in. The fact is it is a modern 21st century way of meeting people and it works remarkably well. In fact, I met my current wife through an online site.

The first thing to do is to make a decision. Decide that now your relationship is over, you are not simply going to sit at home and stare at the walls feeling sorry for yourself. Make a deal with yourself that you are going to “get out there” and enjoy life, after all, you have got it back now!

Secondly, find an internet dating site. The best way is by the recommendation of a friend, but if you don’t know of anyone who’s used it, any of the more reputable ones will do. Watch out for their adverts on TV.
Most reputable sites use a small amount of psychometric profiling to better match you to potential partners. Answer the questions honestly, don’t pretend to be James Bond. The profiling is usually very basic, but surprisingly effective, but not if you lie!

Thirdly, when it comes to filling in your personal profile, make it interesting. Avoid the provided answers to the questions – you will find that about 80% (or so it seemed to me) of women use the answer “I want to take my kids on the Machu Picchu Trail”, which is probably meant to sound sophisticated and knowledgeable, but in reality comes across as crass and middle class, which is fine, but a bit boring when read for the umpteenth time. Just use one word answers if you wish to stimulate interest!

Fourthly, always upload a picture. Some sites will let only those you want to see it see it, but I think it’s best in plain view. Some people worry that they will b e seen by their friends, but so what? That can only happen if they are on the dating site as well!
