The Online Dating Dos and Don’ts
By Janet Grace Ortigas
In the advent of modern technology where almost every household has access to the World Wide Web, dating has evolved with it and has never been easier and is widely regarded as an intelligent, effective, and practical way of meeting people for relationships and even marriage. There are hundreds of online dating sites providing all types of dating services to over 40 million people worldwide in just a few years.
Some sites even feature successful relationships of couples who met online. And the magic behind this remarkable phenomenon is the opportunity to contact multiple prospects at the same time and determine whether one is worth keeping or you can continue your search. Online dating also makes dating experience easier and it’s low cost compared to traditional dating which involves dinner, movies, etc. It’s convenient, efficient, and fast contact without the awkwardness of first introductions not to mention the limitless supply of people to date. Video chat will allow you to see and talk to the other person making it almost personal interaction. And with over 40 million people doing it worldwide, can it possibly go wrong?
However, just like normal way of dating, there are also dos and don’ts. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Dos
1. Be honest in your online profile. List all your likes and dislikes so it’s easier for others to tell if both of you share the same interest. Be sure to use your own photos and not of celebrities. If not, others might think you’re not confident enough or make you look suspicious.
2. Plan to meet face to face – when you do, meet in public places and be sure to inform your family or friends where you’re going. Better yet, bring a friend with you.
3. Split the bill – It’s customary for a man to pay the bill himself but since it’s your first time to meet, it would be best to split it with him. That way, you won’t feel obligated to give something in return.
4. Listen to your intuition – women have inner instinct and most of the time, they are right. If you feel like something is not right, then your intuition might be right.
5. Lower your expectations – people online tend to pretend and be someone else they are not so don’t expect them to be as great as they claimed to be. That why, you won’t be disappointed if they aren’t.
Don’ts
1. Don’t give out personal information – don’t include your home/office address on your profile as well as other information that others might use to steal your identity.
2. Don’t trust them right away – even if you already met once, that is not enough time to know who that person really is so never let your guard down.
3. Don’t think that you’re in love – you haven’t met yet or haven’t spent enough time with them to know what kind of people they are.
4. Don’t take your date home – you just met the person and it’s not wise to let them know where you live. If you don’t have a ride, call your friend or take a cab.
5. Don’t forget your cell phone – even if you met the person more than once, it is best not to feel safe around him/her yet. Make sure you have your cell phone with you in case of emergency.
These are just safety tips for you to consider if you’re dating someone online. Remember not to believe everything written on their profile nor what they say about themselves. While many couples have been successful there are those who became victims of scams or criminals who use online dating sites for felony.
