Meet Mike, 31 y.o. He is self-employed from New York. Mike’s opinion ahead.

There are so many differences in cultures that shape the person’s development. Sometimes it leads to a significant difference to what people are accustomed to in USA.

However, it is this difference between USA and former SU that appeals to Mike. It manifests itself in many ways: the way women dress, their point of view regarding relationships and family, and in the manner in which they approach life in general.

While staying in Russia, Mike got a general feeling of a much higher sense of responsibility for oneself and lack of so called “crap”. This lack of “crap” appears in the women in their attitudes towards most everything. If they like you, they will tell you and if they don’t, they will tell you. The determination as to whether or not they are one of the bad apples is relatively easy, just keep your head above water and don’t get lost in the beauty.

Mike admires the fact that Russian ladies like for a man to be a man, strong and dominant. “In America it is almost not politically correct to behave “like a man”, he says. “In the FSU it is not only accepted, it is expected. I like this. The simplest example is how we men are, generally speaking, visually stimulated. In America, if you are “caught staring” you are considered to be an ogre who deserves only to be shot at dawn. In Russia, it is perfectly fine to stare at a woman you find attractive. In my experience they find it a compliment.”

Mike admits that he could not find the aforementioned qualities in an American lady. He is not able to do this, despite how hard he has looked. So he expanded his search for a partner to include those who live in Russia.

In an overall summary, Mike says: ” I prefer Russian women to American women because they generally have beauty, intelligence, great personalities, a stronger sense of family, enjoy being and looking feminine.”

Did you know that the International Women’s Day is widely celebrated in many countries of the former USSR and is an official holiday in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan?

Here is what Wikipedia writes on the history of the International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8:
” The idea of having an international women’s day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. By urban legend, women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8 March 1857 in New York City.[...] The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police.[...]”

This day as an official holiday in Russia, was established after the October revolution of 1917. On May 8, 1965 International Women’s Day was declared as a non working day in the USSR. It is still a non working day in those former SU republics which officially celebrate this holiday.

Starting as a political event, the holiday nearly lost its political flavor. This first spring holiday became simply an occasion for men to express their love to their wives, girlfriends and colleagues. Women usually get gifts from their employers too. School children also bring flowers for their teachers.

This holiday is also observed as an equivalent of Mother’s Day, where mothers and grandmothers are honored.

To celebrate the day, men give small presents to women. Which are the most popular presents for the International Women’s Day? The most common March 8 gifts are yellow mimosas, first tulips (or any flowers according to climate zones), chocolate and perfume.

International Women’s Day holds a lot of significance and is one of the holidays which is loved and enjoyed by most people. Many celebrations are held during the day: from business conferences and government activities to local women’s craft markets, shows and fashion parades. This shows the power of women and their importance in the modern world.
